The coaching staff is extremely proud of Brent because he did the most with his talent and ability. There are not many class AA teams that have starting linemen the size of Brent, and this year he had 40 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, 10 quarterback sacks and 1 blocked punt. But you cannot measure Brent only by his numbers: you must look into his heart, his unique toughness, and his disciplined will. The league coaches voted him honorable mention all-league, and his teammates voted him most improved defensive lineman. We will miss Brent, but his attitude, belief in Athens football, and character will remain as a role-model for the future.

I Learn a lot and feel comfortable working with Brent. He is very knowledgeable and effective. I can get a lot of good advice from him.

I always felt like I was watching a performance in your class, you have such a skill for teaching. You inspired us in one moment, made us laugh the next, and finished off by wrenching our hearts and thus inspiring us more....Your insight is useful, your perspective brings a smile to my face, and your compassion gives me hope.

Brent was humble, respectful, courteous, kind, and expressive of his gratitude for my help. He explained how my case analyses connected to the broader landscape of regulatory work and offered expansive perspectives on my casework that I found enjoyable to work through with him. He made suggestions to improve my work and the program at large and stuck by those suggestions when he believed that not taking them may have affected the Enforcement program’s efficacy/defensibility. He is a really good example for an early-career person like me to learn from, and I’ve gained a lot from working alongside him; not just in getting better at my job, but also in lessons on advocating for and articulating myself in a professional environment.

I wanted to convey how nice it has been working with you and how impressed I was with your ability and willingness to jump into the deep end right away and provide super helpful guidance and perspective on some tricky issues right out of the gate.

I want to say that your mentorship during my undergraduate years was important to me and gave me the confidence to continue searching for my place in the EJ movement. I didn’t have much encouragement growing up, so college was life-changing for me. So I guess what I’m saying is, thanks for taking a chance on me over a decade ago! :)

You really pushed your students to not only learn material, but completely grasp it. The passion and intensity with which you delivered lectures, focusing in on every little aspect of the content being taught, continues to be inspiring today.

I very much remember your class for the wonderful philosophical questions you raised, which not only got me to think a lot back then but they keep accompanying me through my personal developments. The way you connected environmental studies to ethical and existential concerns determined the topic choice for my undergraduate thesis (about the ecological state) and now my master course, namely environmental policy and economics. I could not think of anybody else who so closely shares with me my approach to environmental issues, with so much personal engagement and rational determination. I regret that you are not teaching anymore, the environmental studies course will hardly be as inspiring as you made it.

By far, the most passionate professor on any subject I have had at SF State. He is more than just an instructor, he is a teacher in every sense of the word. Brent has a charisma that lights up the room and engages everyone in class. He is extremely smart and finds creative ways to explain difficult concepts. This guy is awesome.

Thinking about all that you've done, and continue to do, at such a young age still amazes me. Everytime I think about your contributions to the environmental movement, I feel inspired. Thank you for being such a positive impact on me as a young environmentalist.
